Calathea makoyana has thin, oval to elliptical leaves with gently pointed tips and a light, papery texture. The leaf surface is a glossy, pale green to silvery background patterned with bold, dark green oval markings arranged symmetrically along the midrib, resembling peacock feathers (hence the common name "Peacock Plant". The undersides of the leaves is purple or burgundy.
