Bromeliad Cryptanthus bivittatus ARE ground-dwellers (unlike most other bromeliads which are best grown epiphytically.). In the wild they are found growing under trees with dappled light shining onto them. Sometimes they are sold as succulents but this is only very partially true in the sense that they are relatively drought-tolerant, but other than that they do not really retain moisture to survive long periods of drought. They will produce "pups" on top of the mother plant; instead of underneath/on the side. The "pups" can be knocked off fairly easily but you can simply plop them back into the soil and have yourself a new plant.
We find that these color up best with just morning sun or under very bright grow light in case you're looking for a colorful terrarium plant.
